For once, the city of Manchester really was united yesterday.

Sir Alex Ferguson's footballers secured a record 19th league title – and, two hours later, rivals Manchester City won the FA Cup.

The victory over Stoke at Wembley ended a 35-year trophy wait for Blues fans and also means both major domestic trophies are heading to Manchester this season.

Shortly after scoring a penalty earn to his side's 19th Premier League title win, Wayne Rooney celebrated in bizarre fashion by shaving the number '19' into his chest and posting a photograph of it on micro-blogging site Twitter.

It was a remarkable double that left everyone happy. Jubilant celebrations swept the city and in some cases the unthinkable occurred: both teams' fans toasted each other’s success.

'It's been our busiest ever day,' said Claire Rathern, of the city centre sports bar Norwegian Blue.

'We had one game after another, there was a great atmosphere and now we’re getting ready for an even busier night.'

And then the other: City get their hands of the trophy to delight the blue half of Manchester

United got the point they needed at Blackburn when Wayne Rooney scored an equaliser from the penalty spot to level the game at 1-1.

United star Rio Ferdinand uploaded a picture of the squad on Twitter – kick-starting their post-match celebrations.

The caption read: 'Championes championes ole ole ole!! Make sure u #stayonyourfeet tonight all you fans out partying!!'

Former Manchester United star Phil Neville heaped praise on both red and blue sides of Manchester saying: 'Great day for Mancunians...and it’s stopped raining!'

United have now won more top-flight league titles than any other club in history, overtaking Liverpool’s tally of 18.

And at Wembley, Yaya Toure scored the goal which saw Manchester City beat Stoke 1-0 to claim the cup. The two clubs will return to Wembley to contest the Community Shield in August.

Immediately after the final whistle at Ewood Park, United fans flocked to Old Trafford to celebrate the title.

Later, hundreds of City fans gathered at Eastlands to hail their heroes.

City will hold an open-top bus parade in Manchester on Monday, May 23 and United will parade their trophy on Bank Holiday Monday, May 30.

Sir Richard Leese, leader of Manchester City Council, said: 'City winning the FA Cup is a joyous occasion for many people in Manchester, myself included.

'Manchester United winning their 19th top-flight title is a remarkable and historic achievement.

'It’s only fitting that we host a public celebration of those achievements so fans can share the moment and enjoy the success.'
