They're the unsung heroes of many a Hollywood blockbuster or music video, putting their bodies on the line while the A-listers take the acting plaudits from critics.

But these pictures reveal the vital role performed by film stunt doubles, as they are pictured on set next to their household name counterparts.

Some stars like Tom Cruise and Matt Damon insist on doing their own physically dangerous stunt scenes, while others are happy to let doubles stand in.

These images capture the on-set moments actors would prefer you not to see, however, as they are pictured with their near-identical looking colleagues who often step in for the really tough stuff.

Actors and actresses captured with their stand-ins include Jennifer Lopez, Angelina Jolie and Cameron Diaz.

While Harry Potter star Rupert Grint is happy to pose with his acting stand-in, the A-listers pictured with their doubles are caught in more secretive on-set snaps.

One particularly confusing stunt double picture shows Cruise and Diaz with both their stunt doubles at the same time as the four actors film a scene for the film 'Knight and Day'.

Mad Men actress January Jones was seen with her stunt double on the set of X-Men: First Class last year, with the blonde pair both wearing white fur-trimmed outfits ahead of shooting a scene.

But while January, who played Emma Frost in the film, left the more difficult stunt to her double, she said in an interview that she wanted to film as many of her own stunts as possible.

She said: 'I was nearly decapitated by the stunt wires in X-Men. The most difficult stunts were with Michael Fassbender, where I was spinning in the air on those wires.

'While my stunt double did a lot of the harder stuff, I’ve always been very sporty and the stunts and action are part of the fun.'

A lot of the time actors do perform their own stunts in action movies, with the stunt doubles bought in for 'protection'.

Cameron Diaz's stunt double in Knight and Day, Kimberley Shannon Murphy, has previously revealed how Cruise and Diaz are often two actors who insist on doing a lot of physical scenes themselves.

She told website bleedingcool.com in 2010: 'There are plenty of actors who don’t want to do their own stunts and then you come across others that really want to do as much as they can do and Tom and Cameron are definitely two of those people.

'It's part of our job to be behind the scenes. We’re recognised within our own community, as the actors are recognised in their own community.

'I think that for any films that I’ve worked on, everyone appreciates everything that stunt people do and what they bring to the table when it comes to making a film.'

In some cases the respective contributions of the stunt double can lead to conflict.

Natalie Portman's ballet dancing double in Black Swan, Sarah Lane, 27, said the Hollywood actress only performed five per cent of the full-body shots in the last year's critically-acclaimed film.

Miss Lane claimed she was the victim of a 'cover-up' and movie-goers had been misled as to how much of the dancing Portman actually performed in the film.

Fishermen in China made the catch of a lifetime when they hauled this half-ton monster from the deep.

It was snared by Chen Lin - but he needed help from 11 of his friends to load the fish on to a stretcher and carry it ashore.

The fish was pulled from the Heilongjiang River, near the northeastern city of Tongjiang, which lies on the border with Russia, on Tuesday

Mr Chen said it was the biggest fish he had ever seen.

After it was pulled from the water it was taken to a local breeding centre.

Breeders told China Central Television the female is carrying 1.2million eggs, which will be collected and artificially inseminated before the fry are released back into the river.

Kaluga, which are unique to the Heilongjian Basin, are thought to have been around for 130 million years and are among the largest freshwater fish in the world.

The species is listed as critically endangered as it has been fished almost to extinction for its valuable roe.

The Heilongjiang - whose name translates as Black Dragon River - is the tenth longest in the world..

Practical Fishkeeping magazine reports that kaluga prey on salmon and are known to capsize boats and even drown fishermen.

The huge specimen caught this week is not even close to the largest in China's waters, with the maximum size thought to be a ton.

To put this in perspective, Britain's largest freshwater fish was just 61lb 6oz when she died at the age of 30 last year.

The Fat Lady, a mirror carp, had been caught about 200 times and was something of a local legend at St Ives Lakes, Cambridgeshire.

An off-duty scientist thought he'd lend a helping hand when an alligator was spotted along Highway 70 in North Carolina.

But Fred Boyce bit off more than he could chew; as he approached the beast, the alligator viciously attacked him, nearly ripping off his arm.

Mr Boyce was rushed to the hospital to be treated and officials from the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission were able wrangle the beast and return him to the wild.

A motorist first saw the 10-foot alligator crossing the thoroughfare at about 5:30pm Tuesday, according to WCTI.

Mr Boyce, a herpetologist at the nearby Pine Knoll Shores Aquarium, is an expert on amphibians and reptiles.

He's been on staff at the aquarium since March of this year and his Facebook page includes several photos of him participating in gator 'round-ups' and handling other dangerous creatures.

In the video, he throws a towel over the animal's head to block its vision. He approaches it slowly from behind, placing one leg on either side of it and leans down.

The animal whips around and latches onto his arm, toppling him over as it began its attack.

The injured scientist was taken to Carteret General Hospital, according to a statement by the aquarium.

'He is recovering,' said spokesman Julie Powers to the Mail Online. 'He was treated and released.'

A team from the North Carolina Wildlife Resource Commission arrived to secure the alligator, according to WCTI.

'That gator was in a position of advantage there in that ditch. We had to coax him, get him to move somewhere flat where we could have the advantage,' biologist Robbie Norville told WCTI.

'We were able to tie him up, secure his jaw closed. From there, it all went well.'

Local EMS, police officials and even the fire department were called in to help keep the creature at bay.
After the ordeal, the animal was taken to a swamp in Carteret County Tuesday night and released back into the wild.

Mr Norville said that before Mr Boyce's bite, there had only been three recorded bites of an alligator in North Carolina history.

He added that only certified people, like Mr Norville, are legally allowed to handle alligators in the wild.

As he gently nuzzles the nose of an RSPCA inspector, it's hard to believe anyone could abandon little Bob - the black and white puppy is one of the tiniest ever rescued by the charity.

But when he was just eight weeks old, and weighed less than a kilo, was found dumped in the car park of a veterinary practice.

Huddled by a cardboard box, he was shivering from extreme cold and in agony suffering from a ruptured eyeball.

Helping hand: RSPCA Inspector Mel Fisher, who has overseen Bob's care, said: 'He is only around eight weeks old and is probably the tiniest puppy that I have known to be abandoned'

Medics at the surgery in St Albans, Hertfordshire, claim it is a miracle Bob, who also suffered painful skin blistering and canine scabies, survived the night.

RSPCA vets took him in and, in a bid to help keep him warm, cut holes in a blue woolly hat to produce a customised knitted jumper.

Unfortunately, his condition was so bad there was nothing they could do to save the sight in one eye.

But despite the disability, Bob, has battled back to health and is happily bounding around.

He is so keen on his customised wooly clothing, he wears it when he goes outside to explore.

Bob is thought to be a crossbreed and RSPCA officers said they expected him to end up being a cross breed between terrier and chihuahua.

RSPCA Inspector Mel Fisher, who has overseen Bob’s care, said: 'I cannot believe that someone would do this to such a poor innocent animal.

Its tongue stretches as the weight of the creature pulls it towards the ground - and the stubborn reptile seems content to dangle precariously from the cat's mouth.

The confused moggy repeatedly tries to shake off the stripey lizard but is unable to do so.

At one point the lizard begins to disappear into the cat's mouth as it pulls the tongue back in.

Apprentice star Laura Hogg has revealed she learned that the father of her son had been brutally murdered while she was in the middle of filming.

The shaken 28-year-old Scottish businesswoman - who became the latest contestant to be fired from the hit BBC 1 programme on Wednesday - said being told Chris Linsday had been killed in a street attack was 'the worst moment' of her life.

Mystery still surrounds the death of the 34-year-old sales worker who was savagely beaten while on work break with colleagues in the Costa del Sol.

He had become separated from colleagues and was later discovered on the roadside. He died five days later in hospital having never regained consciousness.

Speaking to The Sun, the bridal boutique owner went on to explain how she was pulled aside in October 2011 while the group's were filming one of their first tasks in London.

After waiting an hour to find a quiet hotel room, TV aides finally broke the devastating news.

'I was in an absolute state of shock. I just wanted someone to pinch me. I couldn't speak. It was like something from a film. Laura told the newspaper.'

Mr Lindsay, from Edinburgh, separated from Miss Hogg when their son Reece, now four, was eight weeks old.

Despite no longer being with Chris, and admitting that he didn't have relationship with their son, Laura still said it 'hurts like mad.'

After being told the sad news, Miss Hogg kept it a secret from fellow contestants.

She also faced the turmoil of having to decide whether to quit the programme and return to Scotland to attend the funeral even though she wasn't speaking to Chris' family.

'If Chris had been involved in Reece’s life I’d have been home in a flash. But I thought me going back wasn’t going to influence the situation,' Laura explained.

'I wanted my little boy to have a dad but it became apparent after Reece was born that we were never going to have a happy family.'

The couple were only together for two years but Laura revealed that their relationship began to break down while she was still pregnant.

Laura - who has been with her current boyfriend Ali for four years now - added that it was the 'hardest decision' of her life to walk away from her relationship with Chris but said she 'had no choice.'

In the end, the reality TV star opted to stay in London and didn't attend the funeral because winning the show could have transformed her life.

At first, the blonde didn't want to reveal her anguish to her fellow contestants but the following week she could no longer hold it in and broke down in tears.

On Wednesday night, viewers watched as Lord Sugar pointed the finger at Laura following an art dealing task and the Scottish star couldn't hide her emotions as she left the boardroom.

'I will never know if what had happened affected my performance. I was never going to play that card. But I was devastated when I was fired. I was in the show to go all the way.'

But being on an Apprentice losing side three times - the latest on Wednesday, when her Team Phoenix was trounced in an art sale task - has been the least of her problems.

Miss Hogg, who lives in Broomhill, Glasgow, said: 'I'm feeling a bit gutted at the moment, if I'm honest about it. It's been a sad time, but I'm coping.

'I think I had lost my "oomph". You could see it all over my face in that final boardroom. I knew I was vulnerable.

I mean, ultimately, I didn't do the sales, did I? And you kind of get the feeling you are being "looked at".

'I was very focused and I was there to win. That's the advice I would give anyone on the show - stay focused.' She is, however, still annoyed by Lord Sugar's remarks before he fired her. He told her that selling was her 'day job' and perhaps she 'was not a good business person'.

This week, the opposing teams were asked to represent a well-known urban artist and sell their work from a London gallery to customers, collectors and corporate clients. Miss Hogg's team represented James Jessop, who specialises in 1950s-style 'schlock' comic book covers. She described his art as 'monstrous'.

Miss Hogg said: 'I disagree with Lord Sugar. I am confident in my sales ability.

It was not similar to my day job. I definitely don't sell monstrosities like that. I thought, "I can't make somebody take this".

'Team Phoenix was well beaten on sales revenue and project manager Tom Gearing chose Miss Hogg to join him in the boardroom for failing to make enough money for the side.

But she said: 'I have absolutely no regrets. I definitely benefited from the experience of The Apprentice and I learned a great deal from it. It taught me to stay 100 per cent focused. You cannot let things get on top of you, even when there is limited contact with home. It's all about hard work.

Miss Hogg vowed she would go on to be a big success in business.

She said: 'I am involved in many other projects and I'm particularly pleased to be part of a fantastic new initiative in Scotland called Entrepreneurial Spark. 'I've always had the ambition to be successful and to build an empire. Everything I do is for my wee boy.

'So it's onwards and upwards. Who knows what the future holds?'

It was spotted floating near the surface of the Indian Ocean off the southern tip of Sri Lanka.

Marine experts believe the blue whale – an endangered species with as few as 5,000 left in the wild - had been struck by a container vessel.

The moving pictures were captured by diver Tony Wu, who wanted to highlight the blue whale’s desperate plight in a bid to reduce devastating ship strikes.

He said: 'The whale was collateral damage. It made me incredibly sad to see it in such a state. The animal looked like it had been struck by a ship during the night as it rested at the ocean surface.

'To us, whales are huge. But even then, compared to a fully loaded ship, it would stand practically no chance of surviving a direct hit. It is a big, big problem, especially when endangered species like the blue whale are caught in their path and killed.'

Unofficial figures show thousands of whales – many critically endangered species – have been killed by container ships.

And experts believe many more cases go unrecorded simply because ships don’t even notice they have hit anything.

Tony added: 'When a big ship hits a whale, the impact wouldn't register. It's like a tractor-trailer hitting a butterfly – you would feel nothing.

'There are very active shipping lanes just south of Sri Lanka. Here huge ships travel at high speeds day and night. It is constant.

'They are ferrying consumer goods and supplies between major ports and could be hitting many more whales than we know about.

'It's not clear how big the problem is because there could be so many unrecorded cases.

'The only statement that can be made is that ship strikes are a serious problem, and the number of whales killed by ships is far higher than most people probably understand.'

Tony, who runs snorkelling tours to see marine life, added: 'A few days after I got back to Japan, there was a humpback whale that was killed by a boat there.

'One of the toughest issues is that In the case of ship strikes there's no immediate villain, which makes it more difficult to get people worked up about it.

'But in truth, when you look to the bottom line, it is consumers that are responsible.

'Most of the goods being transported when whales are hit are either consumer goods such as appliances, cars, and electronic goods. The problem needs to be looked into most definitely.'

'He is the love of my life': Mother's inspiring YouTube video about son born with severe cleft palate that left him with no eyes

A mother whose son was born with a rare form of cleft palate that left him with no eyes has made an inspiring video revealing their struggles - and how the baby boy battled their bullies with his laughter.

In the YouTube video, Lacey Buchanan, from Woodbury, Tennessee, holds up cards describing her excitement at falling pregnant with son Christian, and the fears and snide comments that followed.

During the seven-minute film, she holds one-year-old Christian into her chest, only revealing his face to the camera at end of the video as she kisses him and shows him off proudly.

The inspiring video tells the story of Lacey, who met her husband Chris when they were 15, and went on to marry him when they were 21. They fell pregnant when she was 23, one note card reads.

But a week after the discovery, doctors called the couple to say something was wrong: it appeared that their unborn child had developmental problems.

The Buchanans, who are devout Christians, refused to abort the baby, knowing they would love him and he would have a purpose. Doctors said there was an 85 per cent chance of Lacey miscarrying.

When she went to Vanderbilt Medical Center to deliver Christian in February 2011, she did not know if he would live. He survived - yet his condition was much worse than doctors had predicted.

The baby boy suffered from Tessier cleft, a rare and severe cleft palate that can affect different areas of the face - such as the nose, eyes and jaw - in addition to the mouth.

Christian had no palate, was unable to shut his mouth and was born without eyes.

At four days old, he underwent his first surgery. Through a series of operations, doctors have closed his cleft lip but his palate will require more surgeries, his mother said.

He spent four weeks in the neonatal intensive care unit at Vanderbilt Children's Hospital.

When he was finally ready to leave and returned home, 'things were hard', one of Lacey's note cards reads. She and her husband Chris were unprepared for how to raise a blind child, she explains.

Cruel: Despite the struggles they faced, Lacey said she knew she was never going to abort Christian

She also struggled with judgmental stares and whispers from people they passed. People would ask 'What's wrong with your kid?', with one woman even telling her she was 'horrible' for not aborting him.

As Lacey, 25, struggled to stay strong, it was Christian who fought back.

When people would stare at him, he would begin to giggle - and they would start to giggle too.

'Anyone who meets Christian falls in love with him pretty quickly,' one note card reads.

She also says she knows she did the right thing not to abort him as he is 'the love of my life'.

The video has had an incredible response, which comes as a bit of a surprise to Lacey.

'I didn't expect it to be as powerful as it was, because to me it's just me and my son,' Lacey told MailOnline.

'My biggest point witht he video was that he deserves life, and he deserves everything that I am going to give him.

'I was hoping to inspire other parents who are in a situation where they found out that their child may be disabled and they are dealing with the question of whether or not to give a disabled child life.

'I wanted to just give them a little hope that it is hard at times, but there are happy times too, and the happy times so outweigh the hard times.'

She told MailOnline about how her giggly 14-month-old is incredible to watch and she gets so much joy from every day with him. One of her favorite moments is when Christian laughs- something that happens often.

'It's so funny to see him laugh because, since he can't see, anything that he finds amusing is because of sight or touch. It's just wonderful because he really knows the meaning of life's simple pleasures,' she said.

Writing on her blog, Leading The Blind, Lacey said she was inspired to make the video after she saw another YouTube film by a woman named Lizzie, who had also suffered judgemental comments for her looks.

Lacey, who is a law student studying in Nashville, said Lizzie's condition meant her facial features were distorted and she struggled to gain weight. She, too, revealed her face at the end of the film.

'This inspired me so much because I can relate to knowing how it feels to look different,' she wrote. 'It may not be me that looks different, but the stares at my son hurt no less than if they were at me.'

Support: Since uploading the video she has received hundreds of messages from well-wishers, she said

After Lacey created the video in March, she also uploaded it to a Christian channel named GodTube and received more than 20,000 hits in one day.

'I am absolutely blown away by the response that the video has had,' she said. 'I never imagined it would be this big. Thank you so much to everyone who is supporting us in our journey!'

'My Facebook has exploded with messages and friend requests by people who were moved by Christian's story,' she told MailOnline.

'Everybody has juse been really positive saying how beautiful Christian is and we have had the opposite experience quite a lot so it is awesome to see other people besides my family- who already know that he is beautiful- see that too.'

Lacey plans to finish law school, largely because her son has prompted her to specialize in disability advocacy law, because 'I want to be able to help people like Christian'.
