Terrified dog is rescued by kayaker a MILE from coast after fleeing hit-and-run car crash that killed its mother-of-three owner

This is the moment a dog was rescued by a fisherman after swimming a mile out to sea when his owner was killed by a drunk hit-and-run driver while jogging.

Rory O'Connor plucked petrified Barney out of the water while off the coast of Sarasota, Florida.

His owner Donna Chen, a mother of three, was run over and killed by an alleged drunk driver as she jogged with Barney - who ran for his life when he saw the accident.

It was only as he headed for the open ocean that he came across the kayaker, who heaved the bleeding and shivering pet on to his small vessel and returned to shore before taking the animal to a vet.

The kayaker later discovered that the dog was also in shock after witnessing the death of owner Ms Chen, 53.

Blake Talman, 22, is accused of running down Ms Chen while driving at 90mph in a 40mph zone after first escaping from another wreck on Saturday.

Days after the crash, a video emerged revealing the amazing rescue of her dog.

Posting the video on YouTube, the fisherman known only as midget2000x, said: ‘Our guess is that he was so freaked out and traumatised that he just wanted to get as far away from there as possible.

‘And when he ran out of land, he took to water.

‘I feel lucky that I was there fishing, because there was no place for him to go and I don't know if he could have made it much further.’

Barney has now been returned to Ms Chen's bereaved husband and children and is recovering.

The mother’s death occurred just 40 minutes police say they had warned Talman and his friends to leave a beach concession stand because they were upsetting other customers with their allegedly drunken behaviour.

He walked away with a plastic whiskey bottle under his arm before getting in a Nissan Altima in his hands, according to friend David Brewer, who was a passenger.

Mr Brewer, 24, whose right eye was yesterday still swollen shut and purple from the crash, said that the friends went to the beach with two bottles of liquor, looking to have a good time.

‘We did, and some lady paid the price for it,’ he told the Sarasota Herald-Tribune.

Mr Brewer said he, Talman and another friend, Michael Blakey, 25, were at the Siesta Key Beach pavilion around noon, drinking whiskey and listening to music.

Talman, who was fired from his job at concession stand there weeks earlier, was disturbing families there, according staff who alerted deputies.

Officers arrived and ordered the group to move - but Blakey allegedly started yelling abuse at the deputies as he left, so they arrested Blakey on suspicion of disorderly intoxication.

They then walked off to his car

They sat in the parked car, drank some more, turned on music and then left, Brewer said.

At about 1.10pm, Talman is said to have struck a truck while driving along a beach road.

He is then believed to fled, driving 50mph above the speed limit before hitting a pole and striking Ms Chen.

Four thugs who were caught laughing as their dogs tore wild animals to pieces have been jailed for their part in ‘barbaric’ and ‘abhorrent’ badger baiting.

Scarborough Magistrates’ Court heard how a group of six men and a teenage boy dug out and killed two badgers from a sett on farmland at Howsham, near York, in January last year.

Sobia Ahmed, prosecuting, said dogs played tug-of-war with one of the badgers before it was shot in the head and slung into undergrowth, while a pregnant badger was torn to pieces and bled to death.

Alan Alexander, 32, Richard Simpson, 37, and Paul Tindall, 31, all from York, and William Anderson, 26, from Pickering, North Yorkshire, were jailed for 16 weeks at Scarborough Magistrates’ Court after being found guilty of wilfully killing a badger, hunting a mammal with dogs, digging for badgers and interfering with a badger sett.

Alexander and Simpson were also convicted of causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal.

Another two men, Christopher Holmes, 28, and Malcolm Warner, 28, both from York, were handed 12-week custodial sentences suspended for 12 months after they pleaded guilty to wilfully killing a badger, digging for badgers and interfering with a badger sett.

District Judge Kristina Harrison said she was sending out a clear signal to anybody involved in such activities that they would be sent to prison.

A 17-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was given a youth rehabilitation order after he was also found guilty of wilfully killing a badger, hunting a mammal with dogs, digging for badgers and interfering with a badger sett.

Sentencing the men and the teenager, Ms Harrison said: ‘Badger baiting is regarded as a barbaric sport and the public feeling is one of revulsion.’

She continued: ‘The people of Yorkshire will not tolerate badger baiting in their midst. It’s barbaric, it’s abhorrent and anyone convicted of this kind of offence will receive a custodial sentence.

‘This is a clear signal to anybody who seeks to commit this kind of behaviour.’

Ms Ahmed told the court that two witnesses, including wildlife photographer Robert Fuller, heard the sound of dogs barking excitedly and a badger squealing in distress and went to investigate.

When they reached the scene, they saw two large dogs attacking a badger.

Ms Ahmed said: ‘They had hold of it in their mouths and were shaking it violently. They said the dogs were playing tug of war with the badger.’

Mr Fuller today recalled how the men ‘laughingly’ encouraged the beasts before they spotted Mr Fuller and fled the rural scene by the River Derwent, near Howsham in North Yorkshire.

After some time, the badger was shot dead by Anderson and the men, who had become aware of the witnesses and tried to cover their tracks by throwing the dead badger into the undergrowth.

They then buried a second dead badger - a pregnant animal which had been torn to pieces by the dogs - back into the hole from which it had been dug.

Ms Ahmed said witnesses called the police and the men and teenager were arrested a short time later.

Police and RSPCA inspectors who visited the scene found animal intestines and badger foetuses scattered around and areas of congealed blood, believed to be from where the badger had been shot.

When they recovered the two badgers, one was found to have been shot at close range and had a fractured skull and jaw.

The other had part of its abdomen missing and injuries consistent with being attacked by a dog.

Mr Fuller, 38, later gave his pictures to the police and RSPCA and they were used to convict the gang.

When they investigated, the authorities established the men had killed three adult badgers and three unborn cubs.

Ms Ahmed said the pregnant badger suffered 'a sustained attack by a number of dogs that had caused the badger to be torn to pieces and eventually it bled to death' while the other had a 'gunshot wound to the head immediately after a severe and sustained attack by a number of dogs'.

Ms Ahmed described the operation as a 'sophisticated enterprise' in which the men used equipment to track down the badgers.

Mr Fuller, who lives in Thixendale, North Yorksshire, was praised by the trial judge as ‘brave’ and ‘courageous’.

Alexander, Anderson, Simpson and Tindall were told they would serve eight weeks of their sentences before being released on licence.

They were each ordered to pay £750 costs and £100 compensation.

Each of the four defendants was handcuffed and led out of the crowded courtroom by security guards while members of their families sobbed.

Holmes and Warner were told to pay £250 costs and £100 compensation and the 17-year-old was told he would be placed under supervision for 12 months and would have to undertake a number of programmes, including one run by the RSPCA, as part of his youth rehabilitation order.

Mr Fuller today recalled of how he encountered the gang while he was out looking for otters with friend Ged Farmer last January.

He said: "In all there were 13 dogs, eight men with five guns and, as was later established, three dead badgers and three unborn cubs.

'I asked Ged to go and call the police while I took photographs of what was going on.

'I was scared about being seen but I was so sickened by it that I wanted to get pictures of the men being caught in the act.

'One badger gave up and the men just shot it dead.

'This gang were so brazen about what they were doing, it was almost as though they didn’t care.
'I knew that my pictures might be used as evidence in the future and I’m glad they help catch these men.'

He added: 'What I saw that day shocked me. Badgers are tough animals. They will fight when under attack, but generally they are not aggressive.

'What turns my stomach about badger baiting is that they were doing it for the sheer thrill. The men I watched were laughing.'

Speaking after the sentencing, RSPCA Inspector Geoff Edmond said: ‘This is the highest level of animal cruelty. It’s people who have organised to go into the North Yorkshire countryside, dig out and cruelly bait badgers.

He added: 'The significance of what Robert Fuller did cannot be underestimated. It is not often a judge commends a witness and he thoroughly deserved it.

'I’ve been a wildlife officer for 20 years and this is the worst, most horrific and barbaric case I have seen.'

These X-ray pictures show how a baboon carried out a reign of terror over a city suburb in South Africa - despite being shot more than 50 times.

Vets only discovered the number of wounds after the animal, known as Fred, was captured and killed by the authorities in Cape Town.

His post mortem was captured on camera for a Channel 4 documentary about the animal, which learned how to unzip bags and steal food from cars and houses despite carrying bullets and shotgun pellets around in his head and body.

Tube is just pants! Commuters around the world leave their outerwear at home for the 11th annual No Trousers day

At first glance it appears to be a normal rush-hour on the Tube, with commuters listening to their ipods and reading books.

But there is one major difference: they seem to have forgotten their trousers.

The semi-naked crowds were taking part in an international event run by practical joke group Improv Everywhere.

Thousands of people headed to the London Underground and to subways across the world to take part in the No Trousers Tube Ride - 'No Pants day' overseas.

The annual event began with just seven participants in New York in 2001 and has now spread to 60 cities including Washington, Madrid, Toronto and Mexico City.

In London, it caught the imagination of 150 daring individuals, who divided into groups to brave the cold and fellow travellers' stares on different lines around the capital.

Participants in Toronto wore fancy dress along with their underwear as they joined in the fun for a fifth year.

But the flash mobs in Madrid had more difficulty in getting some exposure for their action when the police stopped them from entering their planned starting station.

Improv Everywhere invited people to take part through Facebook, with more than 16,000 people from around the world registering to take part.

Those involved were instructed to act as they would normally on the Underground, by chatting to each other, listening to music or reading.

The idea is to entertain and surprise bystanders, and to lighten the dreariness of the daily commute by making people laugh.

Not everyone saw the funny side, however.

Alicia Lopez - a passenger in Mexico City, where around 700 people took part - said: 'I consider people without pants, without skirts, to be semi-naked. I don't like it.

'I don't know their demands. I don't know what they are seeking because they're protesting but I think there are ways to do it.'

Organiser Dan Becherano said the group wanted to have fun, but also to see what sort of reaction they would provoke.

'The purpose is to have fun and entertain people,' he explained. 'The purpose of flash mobs is to show how we can get together without knowing each other and work as teams without really having seen each other ahead of time.

'The most important thing will be the victims - the reaction of people who aren't involved.'

The monster mice helping man in the fight against obesity

Being placed into a machine for another experiment, these mice are playing a big part in the continuing fight against obesity.

A team from the the Integrated Research and Treatment Centre for Adipositas at Leipzig University are using the animals to test a number of developments they hope will lead to an obesity pill.

The team, of whom Eva Boege, pictured below, is a member are analysing tissue samples of both obese people and animals.

They are 800 samples currently stored there, with an expansion in the pipeline.

Scientists at the university are looking at ways that hunger and satisfy appetite can lead to university.

They are focusing on parts of the brain that are involved in the regulation of hunger in the hope of developing a treatment.

Their project also hopes to replicate a number of hormones which could lead to the development of a treatment strategy for humans.

Scientists have long hope to create the elusive 'obesity pill.'

A previous study, published last year found that overeating mice don't gain weight when a specific protein is removed from the food.

But if we want to have a magic pill that targets klotho, we have to figure out how to be selective in terms of taking away only its harmful effects and not preventing it from performing its essential functions.'

A mother escaped a devastating house blaze which broke out at her own birthday party, killing her four children yesterday, including four-year-old twins.

Michelle Smith had been among friends and family celebrating her her 36th birthday in Lytham Road, Freckleton, Lancashire, last night. They were in high spirits drinking and dancing both inside and outside the family home when the catastrophic fire broke out yesterday at 11.30pm.

It is believed her 19-year-old son Reece Smith, ran into the house to try and save his four-year-old twin sisters Holly and Ella and younger brother Jordan, two.
Tragically all four died in the blaze.

Investigation continues: Police confirmed there was a birthday party at the house, which remains sealed off today

Last night neighbours said Ms Smith was led screaming from the house after the news that four of her nine children had perished in a smoke logged bedroom.

She and some of her children had only lived there three months after the property was given to her to live in by her mother who lives in nearby Lytham.

The house was one of two Michelle's mother inherited and was a former market garden small-holding on the main road through the village.

It is understood the property was in the throes of renovation and had not been lived in for twenty years.

Fire crews said there was 100 per cent damage to the stairs in the house with 50 per cent damage to a wardrobe in the bedroom.

Arriving at the scene today Ms Smith's father Keith Smith, 56, said: 'I found out about it on the news and heard there had been a fire at a house in Lytham Road and I started to think it might be Michelle and the kids.

'It's very shocking, these are such tragic circumstances. I don't know anything about what happened last night. They have lived here for about two and a half years - this was their grandmother's former home.

'I haven't had chance to speak to Michelle yet. It is just terrible. I last saw them all just after Christmas. I can't think of any reason why this has happened. It has just come as a big shock.'

Neighbour Vernon Allan said 'all hell broke loose' as the fire took hold last night in the small village.

He said: 'I heard the sirens at about 11.30pm last night and looked out of the window and suddenly all hell broke loose.

'There were police and fire engines all down the street. When we found out this morning about the loss of lives, and all so young, we were devastated.

'It is sad day for Freckleton, the loss of four young people, it is truly awful. I didn't know them but would see them about and just can't believe what has happened.'

Fire chief at the scene Phil Cox said: 'The place was a frenetic scene when we arrived.Fire teams from three town were sent to the scene around midnight.'

'There were reports of people being trapped we led one adult out and carried out four other younger people.'

'They appeared to be suffering problems from smoke inhalation and were taken to hospital. My men, the police and the ambulance crews all worked on them in a bid to save them.'

'Tragically they have died. Now we need to know what happened in there.'

A joint police and fire investigation is now under way.

A fully grown leopard attacked and injured four people after it strayed into a residential area in the north-east Indian city of Guwahati today.

The locals were seriously wounded by the leopard after it ran into a house on the busy Nabagraha Road in a central residential neighbourhood of Silphukhuri.

An auto rickshaw driver managed to cage the panicked leopard inside the house, which was kept locked until forest department officials arrived and sedated the animal.

Eyewitness Nipu Das said: "We were simply shocked and stunned to find the leopard inside the house and soon the cat started attacking."

One of the injured was admitted to hospital with injuries to his head and face.

The leopard was taken for observation at the Assam State Zoo in Guwahati.

"We believe the cat strayed into the area from a nearby hillock, maybe in search of food," a forest department official said.

The hills around Guwahati are covered in dense jungle.
Large areas of the jungle have been cleared to make way for the construction of houses.

But that has led to an increase in attacks by wild animals as creatures that lived in the jungle have lost their habitat and their food sources.

'I love you all': Heartbreak as brave 12-year-old cancer blogger loses battle to brain tumour

Just days before Jessica Joy Rees lost her heartbreaking battle with brain tumors, her parents wrote on their blog about how they were excited for a great 2012.

They were confident that the 12-year-old girl would reach her goal of making 50,000 of her 'Joy Jars' which were filled with candy and toys for sick children. They were exploring other medical treatments in Europe and out of reach of the FDA. They continued to pray and encouraged others to do the same.

Unfortunately, their prayers were answered differently than they hoped.

'We have prayed and prayed and prayed for sweet Jessie to be healed here on earth but God's plan was to use heaven for healing,' they wrote on Facebook when Jessie died on Thursday.

'Jessie earned her wings today and is with Jesus now!!! No pain..complete vision...spreading joy,' the post continued.

Calling on friends and fans to pray for their family, Eric and Stacey Rees told of their continued plans to help advance cancer research after Jessie lost her 10 month and 2 day battle.

Tens of thousands of people responded by posting updates to the page in a show of support that includes 'likes' and prayers.

By Friday afternoon the outpouring surpassed Jessica's goal to get one 'like' for each of the estimated 50,000 American children with cancer.

The Orange County seventh-grader, called 'Jessie' by family and friends, began her blog and Facebook page after being diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor in March.

A second tumor was discovered in September.

While some of her posts discussed her struggles as she underwent radiation and chemotherapy treatments, others urged readers in dozens of countries to support pediatric cancer research and to pray for other children with the illness.

She always signed her posts with the acronym 'NEGU' (NEE'-goo), short for 'never ever give up.'

More than 3,000 were sold and distributed in 27 states last year, according to the NEGU website.

Co-host Ryan Seacrest also allowed her to announce country singer, and eventual winner, Scott McCreery.

After a particularly hard day in November, Jessica took to her website, jessicajoyrees.com to admonish her pain and focus on her love for all that she did still have in her life.

'I love spreading joy to kids with our JoyJars. I love reading all of the posts on Facebook. I love having so many people praying for me. I love that people are supporting NEGU and allowing us to help kids. I love my family and all of my new friends,' the 12-year-old wrote.
